Markham Thomas Memorial Fund

In Loving Memory of Markham Wilson Thomas

March 8, 1960 – June 27, 2025

Markham Wilson Thomas was born in Evanston, Illinois, on March 8, 1960. A proud alumnus of New Trier High School, Markham was an accomplished athlete who went on to study at the University of Kansas. His professional journey began in media advertising and sales before he transitioned into a career in real estate.

Markham was the beloved son of Dr. Charles Thomas, one of the founding members of the Chessmen Club of the North Shore. Following in his father’s footsteps, Markham became a dedicated and active member of the organization for many years. He had a deep passion for community service and took special pride in leading our annual Holiday Food Basket Program—a role he inherited after his father’s passing and sustained with heart and excellence for over two decades.

An avid golfer, Markham was also instrumental in organizing our Chessmen golf outings. These events not only brought members and friends together in fellowship, but also raised critical funds to support the Food Basket Program and other social service initiatives throughout the Evanston community.

Markham's legacy is one of service, compassion, and commitment to uplifting others. He is survived by his loving wife, Verdi Allen-Thomas; daughter, Sydney Allison Thomas; brother, Charles Richard Thomas Jr.; and a host of cherished family and friends. He was proceeded in death by his beloved mother, Ruth Thomas.

In honor of his memory and lasting contributions, the Chessmen Club has established the Markham Thomas Memorial Fund, supporting scholarships, the Holiday Food Basket Program, and our ongoing service partnerships throughout Evanston.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to this memorial fund to continue Markham’s legacy of giving.
