Message from the President

The Chessmen Club of the North Shore, Inc., thanks you for your support. In 2016, we saw the greatest growth and activity that we have seen in our 58 years of service.

Your support enabled us to award $20,000 in scholarships to 20 students, and for the first time in our history, provide renewable scholarships for up to 4 years to the class of 2016; entitling them to $80,000 in scholarship funding over the next 4 years.

From a community outreach perspective, we sponsored two health initiatives, Man Up and a Mental Health Forum that attracted 90 people interested in improving their health or the health of others in their lives.  Additionally, we sponsored and participated in the Black Male and Female summits at ETHS and supported Books and Breakfast by dedicating 50+ hours of our time reading to kids at Dewey and Lincolnwood schools. On December 23rd, we delivered 300+ Food baskets across the North Shore, feeding over 1500 people.

While 2016 was a growth year for us, there is so much more to be done that will require additional support and contributions from people like you.  Your continued support will help us expand and grow our scholarship fund and increase our community outreach in 2017.

Our 2017 Goals Consist of:

  • Raising $250,000 through our Annual Appeal, Gala, Golf Outing, Hunger & Legacy Fund
  • Implementing a mentoring program for our scholarship recipients
  • Securing paid internships and job opportunities for our scholarship recipients
  • Expanding our social programs initiatives by partnering with other organizations that target literacy, health and hunger initiatives for our youth and community

With your support, we will continue to address how to offset the rising costs of college, address the alarming statistics of low literacy levels, low ACT scores in math and reading, low graduation rates and the 30% achievement gap that impact Black students in Evanston.  Additionally, we will expand of our hunger and health initiatives.

Thank you for all the support you have given us and we look forward to an extraordinary 2017.
